With darker nights and wetter weather setting in, it is important tenants understand why it is so important to prepare buildings to keep users safe from unnecessary incidents.
There are some simple steps you can take as a CHP tenant to prevent avoidable injuries from slips, trips and falls. Throughout the winter period, it is important tenants highlight near misses. Statistics show that for every accident there is at least 30 occasions where it almost happened.
There are a few key ways in which tenants can help:
- Report issues and hazards via Aria Helpdesk
- If you witness an incident, it is vital you explain what you have seen
- Ask your ORM how CHP can help
Issues such as fallen leaves, icy pavements and poor lighting can hide hazards, as well as creating one, so tenants and building users need to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings. Our tenants have the responsibility to make sure we are aware of any areas that are not gritted that should be.
Tenants should also make themselves aware of the guidance in the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 which states that all employees are responsible for:
- Taking reasonable care of their own health and safety.
- Co-operating with their employer and following instructions.
- Report any hazards illnesses or injuries.
A near miss is so much more important to report than an accident, as you could be stopping someone from having that accident. If you hear someone say they almost fell, or that they had seen a hazard, encourage them to report it or get more information and report it.
So please take care of yourselves, and others, report near misses that have happened to you, or that you have witnessed and stop someone from getting seriously injured.
