Celebrating Volunteers’ Week: CHP staff Making a Difference with Volunteering Days

At CHP, we believe our volunteering programme is a win-win: it strengthens the communities we serve and provides fantastic opportunities for our employees to grow personally and professionally.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual UK-wide campaign to celebrate and recognise the contributions of volunteers. Launched in 1984, this initiative has been running for over 40 years, providing organisations and communities a platform to thank current and past volunteers for their invaluable efforts.

The campaign highlights the diversity and unity of volunteer work across the UK. This week also marks the second anniversary of CHP’s volunteering policy, and we are incredibly proud of how our employees have embraced it. Since its launch, over 40% of our workforce has dedicated almost 1,200 hours to volunteering.

Every CHP employee has two days of volunteering leave per year, that they can use to help various causes, from charity Christmas lunches and packing, to helping create beautiful gardens within our buildings.

Examples from the 2024-2025

Karen Barendt, Operation and Relationships Manager, spent one of her volunteering days planting 60 trees at Alfred Barrow Health Care which were provided by The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare through the NHS Forest initiative
Darron Kearns, Technical Manager at CHP, utilised half a day of his volunteering allocation to join forces with Friends of the Cray and Thames 21 for a litter pick along the River Cray in Crayford

What Our Colleagues Are Saying

  • “I really enjoyed this activity, and it was great to be able to spend time with colleagues outside of the usual working environment, to chat and share experiences. Getting to know people better as individuals is a very important part of building a successful team.”
  • “This was an extremely rewarding volunteering day. It is amazing to see so many people from the company volunteer their time to such an amazing cause, helping children at Christmas. It was very moving and overwhelming seeing the sheer number of gifts that have been donated to support this.”
  • “It was refreshing and inspiring to step away from the day to day, and to see the passion of people who support others less fortunate in their local communities. To help out with a great group of colleagues made the day thoroughly enjoyable and wonderful to enjoy a collective sense of achievement when we completed the task we were given.”

Our Employee Volunteering Policy is a key part of CHP’s strategy to put our Buildings at the heart of the Community, providing not just health services but also health and wellbeing initiatives, all of which also directly contributes to our Corporate Social Responsibility agenda.
