A £3.2m investment by Community Health Partnerships (CHP) has transformed St Peter’s Health Centre in Burnley, creating a more integrated and expanded health and wellbeing offer for the local community.
The project has reconfigured the upper floors of the seven‑storey building, creating additional capacity for vital healthcare to be delivered closer to home, benefiting staff, patients and their families.
Through targeted CHP investment, the project has enabled the expansion of key services, including musculoskeletal, mental health and general practice, complementing existing provision such as community audiology, breast services, CAMHS, diagnostics and ear, nose and throat care.
Bringing these together under one roof has created a more integrated care offer, improving access for patients and reducing the need to travel between multiple sites.
The scheme has been delivered in partnership with NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), and LIFTCo partner Eric Wright Partnerships.
Driving the delivery of neighbourhood health infrastructure
Through maximising existing NHS LIFT estate, CHP is playing a key role in enabling the delivery of a neighbourhood health service across the country and supporting wider Government ambition.
The St Peter’s project forms part of a wider local estates programme to shift more primary care services out of acute settings and into the community. St Peter’s Health Centre is one of three NHS LIFT facilities across East Lancashire supporting this transformation, helping to expand local service provision, improve access for patients and reduce pressure on nearby hospitals by delivering care closer to home.
The transformation at St Peter’s Health Centre highlights the impact of targeted investment within NHS LIFT facilities. This investment demonstrates CHP’s commitment to strengthening community‑based services, improving patient access and enabling more integrated models of care. By unlocking underused space, we are delivering clear value for the local health system and directly supporting neighbourhood health ambitions.
Jeanette Leach, Regional Director - North West, Community Health Partnerships
It’s fantastic to see this investment now delivering real benefits for the local community. Working collaboratively with CHP, the ICB and our delivery partners, we’ve been able to transform underused space within St Peter’s into a high-quality clinical environment that supports a wider range of community-based services. This award-winning project really shows how existing healthcare estate can be adapted creatively and efficiently to meet the changing needs of those in the area.
