CHP finds new neighbourhood home for young people’s mental health services

CHP’s strong working relationships and quick action helped to find a new neighbourhood home for Pennine Care’s CAMHS (Children and Adolescents Mental Health Services) when they needed to urgently relocate.

Following Northern Care Alliance’s decision to move services into their own estate from the Croft Shifa Centre in Rochdale, a large proportion of one part of the centre was under threat of remaining empty, at a potential cost of £800,000 per year to Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board (ICB).

At the same time, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust were anxious to find alternative accommodation for their young people’s mental health services as they were based in sub-standard rented accommodation elsewhere.

A quick, coordinated move into the high-quality Croft Shifa building was the solution. Rapid, effective re-purposing of the space meant that this neighbourhood-based building could continue to be used to provide services where they were most needed.

CHP worked proactively with Greater Manchester ICB, outgoing and incoming Trusts with a clear objective to make best use of the space to deliver the Government’s left shift into communities.

  • We created a clear plan to deal with challenging historical issues, including around debt and leases, and resolved these so that the change could move forward.
  • We negotiated resolutions and decisions from the ICB to ensure that the finances worked.
  • Together, we kept on top of all the legal and leasing requirements and approvals with an agreed lease signed in five days.
  • We communicated proactively and daily to keep on top of progress and challenges.

This was a team effort across organisational boundaries in support of an agreed outcome for the benefit of patients and the NHS. Existing working relationships in the ICB and both provider Trusts supported effective action to ensure that everything was achieved in a timely way. We took a flexible approach to ensure success.

I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire staff at Croft Shifa. Your prompt responses to all our queries, as well as your warmth and support in managing the inductions and pre-visits, have been greatly appreciated. Your patience and dedication have made us feel at home here, and we look forward to continuing this positive experience.
