Five modern, flexible clinical examination rooms are now operational at The Worsbrough Centre in Barnsley, following remodelling of an unused minor operations space. This £511,742 remodel, funded and led by Community Health Partnerships (CHP). This means the Dove Valley Practice GP team can provide an extra 40,560 appointments per year in these five clinical rooms, providing greater convenience and accessibility for patients. The extra clinical rooms have received positive feedback from both the Practice staff and patients.
Enhanced facilities for community care
The newly transformed area features five well-equipped clinical examination rooms, with clean and dirty utility facilities. Initially intended as bookable rooms for local healthcare providers, the high-quality rooms are currently fully utilised by the Dove Valley Practice GP team, with expectations of a longer-term lease agreement. This project highlights the significant need for modern and accessible clinical space across the Barnsley place. The upgraded rooms at The Worsbrough Centre were completed in Autumn 2024, with clinical teams and patients benefiting from the new facilities since early 2025.
This collaborative initiative involved key partners, including CHP, Barnsley Estates Partnership (LIFTCo), and Integral UK. The project at The Worsbrough Centre supports the South Yorkshire Integrated Care System’s (ICS) strategic aims to provide care closer to home in neighbourhood centres. By repurposing existing modern, core, flexible, and accessible LIFT buildings, CHP is facilitating the delivery of clinical services within the heart of the community.
Addressing local needs and improving health outcomes
The Worsbrough Centre is situated in an area with high levels of deprivation, where many patients have multiple health conditions, with complex health and social care needs. These additional clinical rooms enable patients to access health services within their local community, reducing the need for travel and providing care in a much more convenient setting.
The £511,742 project was fully funded by Community Health Partnerships, was managed throughout the design and construction phases by CHP teams, including Developments, Health and Safety, alongside the Portfolio Manager and the Operations and Relationship Manager. Continued partnership working with the CHP Health and Safety team ensured that all fire safety critical elements could be inspected to give assurance that the premises remained safe, with several elements improved to reflect current health and fire safety legislation.
CHP supporting Estates Planning Across South Yorkshire
Community Health Partnerships is supporting the South Yorkshire ICS in its estates planning initiatives across Barnsley, with the development at The Worsbrough Centre serving as a key example. The ICS has identified a significant need for increased generic clinical space within The Goldthorpe Centre, The Worsbrough Centre, and The Cudworth Centre LIFT buildings. CHP has worked closely with the ICS strategic estates team, focusing on providing the necessary infrastructure to enable clinical teams to deliver high-quality care in more accessible community settings, ultimately benefiting the local population.
The aim is to support the development of Neighbourhood Centres, maximise the use of available generic clinical space to facilitate integrated care, and assist Barnsley’s acute, community, and primary care providers in delivering planned care services more effectively and closer to patients’ homes.
This remodel at The Worsbrough Centre is a fantastic step forward in providing additional high-quality clinical space within the heart of the local community. It aligns with CHP’s commitment to supporting the NHS in delivering care closer to home in modern and accessible environments. Seeing the Dove Valley Practice already making full use of these new clinical rooms demonstrates the real need for this type of development and highlights the positive impact it immediately had on patients, staff, and carers
