Community Health Partnerships (CHP) is marking Net Zero Week (4 – 11 July) by highlighting the progress being made to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and support more sustainable healthcare facilities across its NHS LIFT estate.
Working with NHS partners and LIFTCos, CHP is investing in practical measures that support the NHS’s net zero ambitions while creating healthier environments for patients, staff and local communities.
Over recent years CHP, working with LIFTCos, have completed more than 100 audits across its healthcare portfolio, installed 100% LED lighting at more than 50 sites, and benchmarked all 308 LIFT buildings against industry energy standards to identify opportunities for further improvement.
Renewable energy continues to play a key role in this work, with 75 CHP buildings now benefiting from solar technology. This includes 42 buildings fitted with photovoltaic (PV) panels that generate electricity and 33 buildings fitted with solar thermal panels that use solar energy to heat water.
Recent solar installations at Newington Health Centre and Alexandra Health Centre in Hull are expected to save the NHS around £18,000 each year while significantly reducing carbon emissions. The project builds on the success at Marfleet Health Centre, where solar panels have supplied more than 40% of the building’s energy . This year, three more CHP health centres in Hull will receive photovoltaic panels to produce electricity to support NHS services.
Alongside improvements to its estate, CHP continues to invest in local sustainability projects through its award-winning Green Fund. The fund supports initiatives including community gardens, biodiversity projects and active travel schemes, helping to create greener spaces and healthier communities.
Net Zero Week is a great opportunity to reflect on the progress we are making towards a greener NHS. From investing in renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions across our estate to supporting community-led environmental projects, we are delivering practical improvements that benefit both people and the planet. By working closely with NHS and LIFTCo partners, we are helping to create more sustainable healthcare facilities while supporting the NHS's long-term net zero ambitions.
