The number of beds at Newton Community Hospital will increase to 39 following successful financial close on a new variation to move services currently on the ground floor into repurposed space upstairs and increase bed and patient capacity.
Work has commenced and should be completed in 26 weeks.
Working alongside Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS TrustMerseycare and LIFTCo partners, Renova, the £1.75m CHP capital funded project will create space within the outpatient department for 9 new inpatient beds, taking the number up to 39, and a gym and physio suite which will replace some of the bookable space within the building.
This project has been initiated under CHP’s PACE (Productivity Acceleration in Community Estates) programme which looks at opportunities and projects across the CHP LIFT estate to increase productivity. The new space provides increased clinical room capacity for additional service provision, significant decreases of void space within the building and value for money for tenants.
It also adheres to the Greener NHS principles as it focuses on better use of our existing estates through creating efficiencies and supporting accessibility, reducing the requirement for transport between healthcare providers by providing a ‘one-stop shop’ for health and care needs. The variation will also include the change of light fittings to LED to reduce the energy output.
CHP’s buildings are predominantly in areas of high healthcare needs situated in local communities across the country, our facilities are therefore well placed to support in the shift from acute to primary care and enable services to be more accessible through local Neighbourhood Health Centres, reducing pressure on local acute hospitals. The project will offer a huge boost to local residents, and will also support NHS plans to shift more care out of hospitals and into the community.
Newton Community Hospital was built in 2008 under the NHS LIFT partnership by CHP and health investor Renova.
The clinical expansion project at Newton supports CHP’s commitment to the PACE Programme, a national CHP initiative to prioritise the delivery of opportunities to increase productivity across the LIFT estate. CHP will continue to work with and support ICBs and Trusts in their strategic initiatives to identify potential opportunities.

Being able to offer extra bed space in a remodelled building at Newton Community Hospital is fantastic. It shows how flexible CHP buildings can be. The new variations will offer an increased bed capacity by a further 11 intermediate care beds for patients on the ground floor and will also include individual bariatric bedroom. The changes will add vital services in the neighbourhood for those who need it most, lessening the need to travel to a larger hospital.

The NHS LIFT estate can play a crucial role in supporting the shift from hospital to community-care, so creating additional bed space at Newton Community Hospital will offer a huge boost. With construction work now underway, we have moved an important step closer to new and improved facilities for local residents and the NHS.
