Thanks to a £2.2m investment from Community Health Partnerships (CHP) patients in Hull will now benefit from improved access to primary care by transforming underused space at The Calvert Centre. The project will enable Kingston Health Practice to relocate into the health centre, expanding from 8 to 10 clinical rooms and delivering over 13,000 additional primary care appointments each year. The move supports the shift towards preventative, community-based care in line with the NHS 10-Year Plan.
Community Health Partnerships (CHP), as NHS infrastructure experts, are working in partnership with Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), Kingston Health Practice, Citycare (LIFTCo), Sewell Construction, and Sewell Advisory (project management), supporting the remodelling project that will enable the GP team to relocate into modern, purpose-built facilities within the Centre located in an area with high health needs.
The project has reached financial close and is now in the next phase of delivery, with the remodelling expected to be finished in the autumn.
Improving access for patients and supporting NHS primary care services
The move will enable the practice to significantly expand its services, generating over 13,000 additional GP appointments each year. Alongside this the enhanced space has been designed to support GPs, nurses, and healthcare professionals to work more closely together. This will improve coordination of care and support the delivery of integrated services aligned with the Humber and North Yorkshire ICS Primary Care Delivery Plan. The new facilities will also provide an improved working environment for staff, supporting recruitment, retention, and workforce growth.
The remodelling of the Calvert Centre represents a significant step forward in enhancing primary care provision in Hull. This project is a key part of CHP’s ongoing work to improve LIFT healthcare facilities across the country, and underscores CHP’s commitment to investing in community health infrastructure, supporting the delivery of high-quality primary care services.
CHP’s £2.2m investment in The Calvert Centre shows how we have worked with NHS partners to make better use of the LIFT estate while improving access to care for patients. By transforming under used space into modern clinical facilities for Kingston Health, we’re increasing capacity and supporting more integrated, community-based services in line with the NHS 10-year plan. This project demonstrates our commitment to delivering real benefits for communities in Hull.
Jane Fitch, Regional Director for North East, Community Health Partnerships
This is an important investment for local people in Hull, helping to expand access to GP services and create a more modern, welcoming environment for patients and staff. Increasing the number of clinical rooms will allow the practice to offer more appointments and support earlier, preventative care. It’s a great example of partners working together to strengthen services in communities with high health need and ensure people can access the care they need, closer to where they live.
Toni Yel, Assistant Director Community Integration & Transformation for Hull Place
This transformation of the Calvert Centre will enable the health centre to provide more clinical rooms, providing thousands of extra medical appointments and helping patients get care and advice quicker. The better utilisation of the health centre is welcome and represents a great example of the work we undertake jointly with system partners to deliver improved health outcomes for the city.
Tim Wigglesworth, Chief Executive, Citycare (LIFTCo)
