Keeping Cool in CHP Buildings: Tips for Tenants

As we approach summer we need to be mindful of the potential for unusually high temperatures across the UK. In 2025, we saw temperatures peak at 35 degrees and we recognise that this has led to difficulties. We understand how challenging these conditions can be for both staff and patients, and have provided some practical suggestions to help make your working environment more comfortable below.

How to keep your workspace cool

Keeping your workspace cool will help you and your colleagues stay well and productive. In the first instance you should try to identify, and turn off, any unnecessary equipment. For example, lights add heat to the room so turning them off will help.

Further ideas include:

  • Turning off electrical equipment, rather than placing it on standby, will help as well as keeping sunlight off your workspace and equipment
  • Close window blinds, if you have them.
  • Ensuring trickle vents (a small vent in your window) are open if they are installed, can also help.

There will, however, be times where you cannot keep the sun off your equipment or workspace and your Operations and Relationship Manager (ORM) can help with alternative arrangements to create a more shaded space or have blinds to be added to your room if they are not already.

Portable or desk fans are also a popular choice. If you do allow staff to use either of these, please ensure they are PAT tested and be mindful of location. Trailing cables are a trip hazard and staff must remember to switch their fan off when they leave their desk.

Keeping yourself cool

We recognise that many tenants have dress codes in place, but during periods of hot weather it may help to consider more relaxed arrangements where possible. Lightweight, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing can make a significant difference to comfort.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids and taking regular breaks. Try to find a shaded area or get a cold drink from a café or local shop.

How to keep your building cool

As a first port of call, please check with your ORM, or CHP representative, to understand if your heating is switched off, especially during hot spells. Contractual requirements and/or NHS standards may dictate rooms are maintained at a set temperature in some instances, which we understand.

  • Use air-conditioning where possible. Make sure doors and windows are closed to ensure efficiency.
  • Open windows to reduce humidity and increase airflow if air-conditioning is not available.
  • Open windows on opposite sides of the building. This will aid air flow and allow hot air to escape.
