Building in the heart of Manchester community provides important wellbeing hub

CHP LIFT buildings are designed to be flexible and form cornerstones in the heart of the community delivering place-based care. A fantastic example of our work can be seen at the Forum Health Centre, Wythenshawe.

The Forum Health Centre is adjacent to the main Forum Centre, which opened in 1971 to offer a unique range of shops and services for the local community. The £20 million remodelling of the building in 2002 included two extensions to accommodate the health centre and children’s nursery.

Wythenshawe is 8 miles south of Manchester City Centre, is the largest district within the city and has one of the biggest areas of social housing in Europe.

Officially opened by Andy Burnham, who was Chief Secretary to the Treasury at the time and is now Greater Manchester mayor, in July 2007, the centre operates a number of different services from the multi-storey building, including 2 GP Practices; Cornishway Group Practice and Peel Hall Medical Practice.

The Cornishway Group Practice includes 8 GP’s, 2 Practice nurses and an in-house pharmacy team and hosts a number of clinics including diabetes nurses and community alcohol link workers.

Cornishway is also a training practice in the South Manchester rotation with close links to nearby Wythenshawe Hospital where they teach and train doctors at all levels from medical students through to Registrars (GP trainees in their final year before qualifying as GPs).

Peel Hall Medical Practice operates with a team of 7 GP’s, 2 staff nurses, an in-house pharmacy team and support staff. Peel Hall Medical Practice is an active member of Wythenshawe Primary Care Network (PCN) working with other practices in the area to improve community services in South Manchester. They run regular flu vaccine clinics for the over 65 age group and regularly vaccinate more than 450 people per day when these clinics run.

As well as the GP practices a number of key services run from the health centre to support the local community:

  • Dental services,
  • Minor Surgery,
  • Podiatry, Speech and Language Therapy,
  • Mental Health Services,
  • Health Visitors,
  • Dieticians
  • Children’s services.

The building also includes a gym and swimming facility making the Forum Health Centre more than just a health building, – it is a hub for the surrounding communities to access wellbeing services as part of the drive to prevent more serious illness in an area of high health need.

Andy Muir, Regional Director – North West at Community Health Partnerships, commented: “The Forum Health Centre in Wythenshawe is a prime example of what a CHP building can be within a community. Not only does it provide so many vital services under one roof but is accessible via public transport in an area of high health need due to it’s economic situation.’

“As a building that is rooted in the community it serves multiple purposes but most importantly, it acts as a wellbeing hub for the local area with people able to take advantage of the leisure facilities as well as receiving health care.”

CHP Tenant Hub

The hub covers information for CHP tenants on health and safety, sustainability, facilities management including HardFM, and SoftFM, leases, charges and billing. In addition there is information on bookable rooms and filming at our premises.
