Community Health Partnerships (CHP) are funding internal variation works to expand the number of clinical rooms for the Chadwick Practice at One Life Hartlepool Medical Centre (OLH). The project is a £109k capital investment from CHP at the three-story 6,400m2 health care building. The project will take out walls in a storage room, remove a WC and create a new corridor to access three underutilised consultation rooms on the ground floor in the adjacent Minor Injuries Unit (MIU). The additional space supports the GP Practice managing their list size as their current premises are undersized. Currently the team have a treatment room and 10 consulting rooms.
This variation follows CHP partnership working with Tees Valley CCG and Durham and Tees Community Ventures (LIFTCo) to identify additional clinical space for the GP team at the Chadwick Practice. The building work is project managed by FES FM Ltd who are contracting the works to Milestone Infrastructure.
The work is expected to take four weeks and began in early-June. There will be alterations to electricity, lighting and IT services to feed into the Chadwick GP surgery systems. Redecoration and replacement of fittings to any areas affected by the works will be completed during the project.
Current services at One Life Hartlepool include podiatry, respiratory services, musculoskeletal teams, Audiology with a community speech and language service. In addition to the Chadwick GP team there are two other GP practices based at OLH. There is also a dental service on site serving the local community. As with most CHP buildings, bookable rooms are available for sessional services and there are also two large meeting rooms.

Graeme Earl, Estates and IT Lead for Tees Valley CCG commented: “Chadwick Practice have been struggling for space to manage their current patient list size and were land locked within the main One Life building. Being able to knock through into the old Minor Injuries Unit to access the three extra clinical rooms will help the Practice immensely in increasing their access for patients and will also help reduce the underutilised space within the old Minor Injuries Unit.”

Later in 2022, more work will be undertaken at One Life Hartlepool to provide additional theatre space. The project will reconfigure the theatres on level 1, above the former minor injuries unit, moving some walls, moving cabinets and provide an enhanced space for day case operation recovery. These upgrades will give better utilisation of the facility and the project will cost approximately £260k.
