Services move into modernised space at Accrington Acorn Primary Care Centre

Services from Accrington Victoria Hospital have been moved into Community Health Accrington Acorn Health Centre through partnership working between CHP and East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust (ELHT).

Announced in October 2024 the changes saw services moved into modern, fit-for-purpose space within Accrington from the hospital which is in a critical condition. CHP and ELHT were committed to ensuring that main services would remain in the heart of the community.

CHP worked alongside ELHT and Eric Wright to move vital services across to the building including the Minor Injuries unit, midwife clinics, general outpatients, x-ray and PWE GP Practice amongst others. The changes took place over the course of a week and included the installation of new treatment booths, an area for triage and a temporary waiting room.

The services are now able to deliver vital care in an updated building for an area of high health need to the people of Accrington and surrounding areas. Plans across East Lancashire also include the relocation of services to CHP’s Accrington Pals Primary Health Care Centre and Barbara Castle Way Health Centre in Blackburn.

These changes will help CHP alongside their partners deliver services to the local community in the heart of the community and will help to better utilise the contemporary spaces available across the NHS LIFT estate. It will also help improve, and make a difference, to those who face the highest level of health inequalities and support the drive to increase productivity throughout the NHS to improve patient outcomes.

Its fantastic to have been involved in moving the services we have so far from Accrington Victoria Hospital. We, at CHP, are proud that our buildings are help in areas of high health need, providing quality, fit-for-purpose, well designed buildings that deliver services that build healthier communities. Changes like those in Accrington are just one example of our aims to drive utilisation, productivity and positive patient outcomes throughout the NHS within the North West and show how quickly these changes can be made through partnership working.

We were able to move these services as quickly as was possible to ensure minimal disruption to patients and their care. It was fantastic to work with colleagues across the local authority and wider health and social care system to do this together and provide a new fit-for-purpose, modern space.
