Tenant Update: Why recycling and waste segregation matter

At Community Health Partnerships (CHP), we are working with tenants, LIFTCos, waste partners and NHS organisations to reduce environmental impact across our health centres. Better waste segregation and increased recycling support CHP’s Green Plan 2026-29: Driving a Sustainable Future, the NHS net zero ambition, and safe, welcoming spaces for patients, staff and visitors.

Good waste management helps reduce carbon emissions, supports environmental sustainability, improves value for money, and keeps healthcare facilities clean, safe and efficient.

CHP performance across the portfolio

In July 2026, CHP exceeded the Government’s offensive waste segregation target of 60%, reaching 63.08% nationally across the portfolio.

This reflects the work of CHP teams, tenants, waste management partners and stakeholders to improve segregation practices across CHP buildings.

How CHP tenants and visitors can help with recycling

Across CHP buildings, recycling and reuse can include paper, confidential waste, cardboard, plastics, metals, glass, cans, textiles, furniture and NHS walking aids, depending on local arrangements.

Everyone using CHP buildings can support better recycling and waste management by taking a few simple steps.

Reduce waste first

  • Print only when necessary and use digital documents where possible.
  • Avoid unnecessary packaging and single-use items.
  • Choose reusable cups, bottles and other everyday items where suitable.

Reuse where possible

  • Share surplus office supplies with colleagues or neighbouring teams.
  • Repair items before replacing them where this is safe and practical.
  • Explore opportunities to reuse furniture, equipment or office items before disposal, or donate them to charity.

Contact your Operations and Relationship Manager (ORM) to discuss further.

Recycle correctly

  • Check recycling signage before putting items in the bin.
  • Keep recyclable materials clean, dry and uncontaminated.
  • Use the correct waste streams for paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, glass and cans.
  • Ask your ORM if you are unsure which bin to use.

Segregate healthcare waste safely

  • Place offensive waste, clinical waste and domestic waste in the correct containers.
  • Do not place non-infectious waste into clinical or infectious waste streams.
  • Report damaged, unclear or missing waste signage to your ORM.

What to do next

  • Check the waste and recycling signage in your building.
  • Speak to your ORM if you are unsure about local waste arrangements.
  • Encourage colleagues, visitors and partners to use the correct bins.
  • Share examples of local recycling or reuse activity with CHP so we can highlight good practice across the CHP estate.

Supporting the Greener NHS programme

The Greener NHS programme is helping NHS organisations, staff and suppliers reduce emissions and support the NHS ambition to become a net zero health service. Waste reduction and recycling are important parts of this work, alongside energy efficiency, sustainable travel, procurement and the way NHS buildings are managed.

CHP’s Green Plan 2026–2029, ‘Driving a Sustainable Future’, supports practical action across the estate, working with tenants, suppliers, LIFTCos and Integrated Care Systems.
